President of Maldives on California's Leadership
"I am also encouraged by regional climate initiatives, in places like California and Quebec, where true leadership is being shown – outside the realm of the nation-state.", President Nasheed of Maldives.
This was stated during the Climate Change talks in Copenhagen. I was very encouraged to hear this because it made me realize how important the work of groups like the California League of Conservation Voters is during a time in which our planet is facing the looming threats of climate change.
I was especially encouraged because President Nasheed has been very outspoken about the need for effective policies to combat climate change. The reason for this is because he and his island nation have the most to lose.
His small island nation of Maldives is threatened to be submerged by rising ocean waters caused by climate change.
To raise awareness of the threat of Climate Change President Nasheed went so far as to hold a cabinet meeting underwater wearing scuba gear. (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/10/16/maldives-president-and-ca_n_323468.html)
Unfortunately, our current governor vetoed legislation to strengthen California's climate change policies this year. We need better, more courageous leadership during times like these. It is also unfortunate that none of the major gubenetorial candidates have not offered an inspiring vision for a green "new deal" which our state, country, and planet so desperately need.
How about some leadership on the environment?
