Sen. Byron Sher on Building a Greener Governor

Former State Senator Byron Sher is a legend in the environmental community. As a member of the California Legislature for 24 years, he was a perennial champion of environmental protection.

Some of the bills he authored that were signed into law, just in his last few years in the legislature:

  • established California's successful e-waste program,
  • nullified the Bush-era rollbacks of the Clean Air Act in California,
  • created California's renewable energy standard,
  • expanded the state's recycling program, and
  • banned toxic mercury in certain products,

among many others.

He also authored the California Clean Air Act, the Integrated Waste Management Act, and the Safe Drinking Water Act, and had other major accomplishments in conserving energy, protecting old growth redwoods, reducing municipal waste, and more.

(Yes, one person did all that, which is why CLCV awarded him our Environmental Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004, and named our Lifetime Achievement Award after him starting in 2005.)

All of that explains why, when Senator Sher told us what he values in a governor, we listened. (Needless to say, we think you should, too.)
